Trek 27: Gold Rush Trail

New Roads
New roads have been built in the area of this trek, replacing some of the trails shown on the map (page 246). The route from San José through Santa Rosa and Zapotepamba to the Río de Saraguro is now along unpaved road. This road turns south to La Papaya and Saraguro, while our trekking route proceeds west to Corral Pamba. The additional road-walking detracts only slightly from the trek. The area remains very interesting and beautiful.

Take Topo Maps and Plenty of Water
Trekker David Jessop reports difficulty following the route from the tarabita up to Corral Pamba in February 2004. He ran short of water in this hot dry section. David did not have the IGM topographic maps which we recommend. Please remember that this is a difficult trek. Be sure to tank-up on water at the Río de Saraguro and to always trek with the appropriate topos.
