Trek 9: Hostel Hopping to Quilotoa

Two Dutch tourists were killed while hiking in the Quilotoa area in July 2003, in what appears to have been a bungled robbery attempt. The incident shocked local residents, hotel and tour operators alike, especially in view of the area's previously excellent public safety record. The consensus is that this was an isolated occurrence rather than a reflection of any ongoing threat to visitors.

The authors trekked in the Quilotoa area in May 2004 and the atmosphere seemed safe, pleasant and tranquil. No further incidents have been reported since that time. For those who wish to inquire locally before undertaking this trek, reliable information may be obtained from the Black Sheep Inn in Cucchillán, phone (03)281-4587, www.blacksheepinn.com.
