Volcanic Activity Update
May 18, 2007

Trek 14: Around Tungurahua
Trek 18: Volcano Watching
Trek 19: Crater of El Altar

Tungurahua has remained active since 1999, with the strongest eruptions to date taking place in July and August 2006. Small communities on the west flank of the volcano suffered damage, but Baños was unharmed. The sight, sound and feel of the erupting colossus has at times been stunning. The level of activity continues to fluctuate and all trekkers are advised to make detailed inquiries before walking in the area. One recommended source of information is the website of the Ecuadorean National Geophysics Institute (www.igepn.edu.ec).

At present, it is not safe to climb Tungurahua. Trek 14, Around Tungurahua, is also not recommended unless the level of activity diminishes. Treks 18 and 19 may be safer, subject to the above precautions. When trekking in the area, always take a small disposable mask to protect against volcanic ash.

The direct road from Baños to Puela and Penipe remains closed to vehicles. The easiest access to all three trailheads is therefore from Riobamba.
